House P
Swanbourne, WA, Australia
Type: Living - Single Residential
Stage: Construction begins mid 2009
Client: Private
Sited on a block in a new subdivision in Perth’s western suburbs, the brief for this house was to provide a comfortable and adaptable home on a tight site with strict design guidelines and building envelope. The general need was to maximise the allowable footprint, while freeing up indoor spaces and maximising connections to a series of outdoor courtyards.
The project responds to its generic suburban context by continuing the natural line of the street at ground level and subtly shifting away to face north upstairs – maximising solar access and spaces for living. The private and more interior spaces of the house are contained in a dark volume which lifts away from the ground, liberating the ground floor living areas and effectively allowing views and connection from the front garden through to the rear terrace.
